For most homeowners there comes a time when you must invite a roofing, siding or exterior expert to the home for an assessment of the structure’s status and potential need for repair or new installation. There are dozens of companies out there that are looking to get your business – how do you decide which company to work with? Here are a few tips and questions that will make the process easier and leave you feeling confident about your decision.
Things To Know
- Do you use the internet? Who doesn’t? Start your search for a professional roofing company by identifying the businesses in your area. Take your time and look at their websites that list their services, hours of operation, etc. Many companies now have reviews so take the time to read through these as well. (However, be mindful this information can be massaged to make them look better.)
- Contact two or three companies that best fit your needs. Set up appointments for them to do a preliminary inspection.
- Take note of their appearance and presentation from the outset of the meeting. Do they dress professionally or in a company uniform? Do they offer a business card? Do they have an inspection list that they explain as they conduct their walk-through?
- Ask the representative to give you some information about the company’s history. For instance, how long have they been in business? How many homes have they repaired or replaced the siding or roof on?
- Does the representative have a copy of the business license that can be validated with the Better Business Bureau or other government organization? Is the company licensed and bonded?
- If the representative is there to perform an estimate, confirm that it includes all costs and there are no hidden expenses that may occur once the job has begun. A truly professional roofing and exterior specialist should be able to identify potential problems in advance and explain these to the homeowner prior to any work being undertaken.
Also ask about warranties, the length of the project, supervisors, and references. Repeat this process for at least two other inspections and then compare costs, and other issues as the basis for decision-making. Your home is likely your greatest investment. It deserves the time and attention required to keep it in pristine condition.
