How to Avoid Gutter Overflow

Gutters are shallow troughs that are affixed to a roof’s edge. Their purpose is to catch and carry water overflow away from the home’s foundation. This helps to prevent damage to the home’s roof or siding as well as preventing basement flooding or soil erosion alongside the structure. Not all homes require gutters – in extremely hot, dry climates with little rain they are not necessary.

It is advisable to clean your gutters several times a year – especially when fall and winter set in. The reason for this is simple. Leaves and other debris can collect in gutters in the autumn, and ice and snow can also pack a gutter. When this happens, the gutter is not able to ‘do its job’. In other words, the rain will not be carried away from the roof, siding and structure and damage will incur.

What follows are several simple steps that can be taken to avoid gutter overflow.

Create a schedule to inspect your gutters regularly. Look for signs of erosion or other damage. Ensure the gutters are snug against the structure and not sagging in any way and that they are aligned properly so there is no water left standing inside the channel-way. Remember, a gutter that shows signs of wear is an invitation for replacement. Otherwise, the cost in damage to the home and yard can be much more expensive.

Ensure there are no trees and branches that overhang the gutters. Tree debris, including everything from seeds to leaves, and twigs to larger limbs, can clog the gutter.

Develop a plan to keep gutters clean. Homeowners may perform this chore themselves, or they may hire a service to perform the job. The important thing to remember is that gutters must be clear of leaves and debris and fall and winter are the
most common times of the year for ‘gutter build-up’.

Do not overlook corner areas of a gutter system. Often, the water and debris will flow easily until it reaches a ‘joint’ in the system. There it may get stuck and obstruct the free flow of water. Be sure to pay careful attention to these parts of your gutter system.
